How To Stick To Your Resolution To Lose Weight.

March 11th, 2010

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most frequent New Year’s resolution in the West is to lose weight. However, it is also the first New Year’s resolution most likely to be broken! Losing weight is not hard in theory, but practice is oh, so different. This is because it involves lifestyle changes.

Our bodies change as we get older and typically our level of activity decreases too. Maybe, we get an office job with a promotion, whereas we used to work ‘in the field’. But people in general, do not adjust their diet to match their variation in circumstances. We sit behind our desks or in retirement and think we can still eat and drink like we did twenty years ago. Big mistake!

Luckily, there are dozens of diets available to help us attain our weight loss goals. There are the traditional calorie counting diets, as espoused by Weight Watchers; there are the ‘new era’ diets like Atkins, which have us counting carbohydrates and there are no end of fad diets which are frankly not worth wasting time talking about.

The choice of which diet you want to follow is all yours, of course, but it is well worth exploring the main kinds of diet to see which one will agree with you. Then you must decide whether you will require the help and encouragement of a weekly visit to a club or not, or whether you can get that companionship from an online club of slimmers, where you talk to fellow slimmers in the club forum online.

It is also worth fixing in your mind, why you want to diet. Is it to look better? Or to feel more comfortable in yourself? Or is it for health reasons? Or all three? Have a think about your reasons and let them motivate you. Whenever, you feel like packing it all in, remember your motivation. Get a book and journal your progress, but first write your motivation in bold capitals on the front page or cover. Keep it before you and read it aloud to yourself every day.

Consult some of the slimming sites online and work out a few key numbers like the typical weight people are for your height, sex and body type and your BMI or body mass index. Write these figures on the first page of your book too and use them as the eventual goals.

You could produce a graph and plot your weekly weight to see how you are doing. Set realistic goals and targets. You can get heaps of free information from the Weight Watchers and Atkins websites or / and go to see your doctor for advice and leaflets.

Aim to shed something like 10-20 pounds in the first month and eight to ten per month after that. Go slowly and aim to go slowly, because then you will hit your targets and you won’t feel like giving up. When you get within five to ten pounds of your target weight, assuming that you have lost a lot of weight, throttle back a little and allow yourself a little more leeway. Drop your target to one pound a week, so that you will get a feel for ‘eating normally’.

The dreaded exercise; you have to face it, you will have to do more exercise, but two times thirty minute walks a day is ordinarily enough. You could swim once a week too or get an exercise machine, if you are tied to the house by family.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with how to lose weight online. If you have an interest in losing weight too, please go over to our website now at Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Overnight Camp Safety issues

February 7th, 2010

Shortly, nearly 10 million children be going to Summer Camps. But before they go, health experts are issuing strong new advice to both parents and camp directors, and recommending new precautions to protect campers’ health.

The new guideline, published in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics, was written by a team led by a University of Michigan Health System physician who specializes in camp health. Edward Walton, M.D., FAAP, FACEP, is lead author of the paper, which is an official policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was produced in conjunction with the American Camp Association.

This new policy suggests parents thoroughly determine if they are sending their child to the “right ” summer camp. Does it meet the child’s mental, emotional and physical well-being, as well as their interests and skills.

Walton says, “camps should provide parents with a complete picture of what their programs involve”. Look at the total package and be sure it is safe an healthy for your child.

Homesickness prevention, the authors write, should start weeks before a child goes off to camp, and can be led by parents with the help of the doctor or other health care provider who performs the child’s pre-camp health assessment.

Parents should also avoid making pre-arranged plans with their children about picking them up if they get homesick. This only gets kids thinking about the way out of camp. Only should parents discuss camp positively, avoid expressing doubts about a child’s ability to avoid homesickness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines say the pediatricians need to be involved with camps in their local have up to date protocols and help as medical backups for camp health personnel.

The increasing numbers of children who have asthma and allergies also bring new challenges for camps. The new guideline recommends that parents teach their children how to use rescue inhalers or EpiPens (allergy-calming epinephrine injection devices) long before the kids go to camp, and to work with camp officials to specify what situations might require children to use the devices. And camp officials are advised to allow children who know how to use such devices to carry them or have them nearby at all times.

“The delay that can occur when another camper or counselor has to run to the camp nurse’s office to grab an inhaler for a child who is having an asthma attack or an EpiPen for a child who has been stung by a bee can have real health consequences,” says Walton.

These guideline are set for traditional summer camps not for those camps with special needs. Yet it is recommend that all camps work with local pediatricians and health professionals to ensure that the best health care is in place for the children.

Free Weight Loss Programs

January 26th, 2010

The race to health and fitness is raging and plenty of people are getting in on it. Some people do it in order to achieve a beautiful body, some people do it because they are ashamed of their body, while others do it just to remain fit and healthy. As such, there are hundreds of fitness programs on the Internet, in gyms, spas and fitness centres all over the world. Some are too expensive – so dear that you will lose weight quickly, just because you have to work hard to earn the money to pay for these fitness programs.

One might not have to go to the gym or the spa or any fitness center and spend a fortune just to slim down and obtain that longed for sexy body. There are many books available in the bookshops offering weight loss programs that seem convenient and cheap. However, the books are not though. These weight loss programs, or diet plans are gaining immense popularity because of their publicity, testimonials and reviews and you might be confused as to exactly which one to follow. So before choosing which weight loss plan to follow, try reading the following summaries of the most popular diet programs around today.

The Atkins’ New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins: This weight loss program encourages a high protein diet with fewer carbohydrates. You can eat loads of vegetables and meat, but must not eat bread, rice or pasta. You are not restricted on your fat intake so it is all right to pour on the (correct) salad dressing and freely spread on the butter. However, during the diet, some people may find themselves short on fibre and high on fat and cholesterol. Grains and fruits are also strictly limited.

The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet by Drs. Heller. This diet plan also recommends a low carbohydrate diet. It recommends eating meat, vegetables and fruit, dairy and grain products. however, advises against consuming too many carbohydrates. So-called “Reward Meals” can be rather high in fats and saturated fats.

Choose to Lose: by Dr. Goor. It recommends restricting your fat intake. You are given a “fat” budget but you are given free reign on how to spend it. It does not force people to regulate their carbohydrate intake. Eating meat and poultry as well as low-fat dairy and seafood is OK. You may also consume vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and pasta. This weight loss plan is quite healthy, because it advises healthy amounts of fruits and vegetables and saturated fats. Watch your triglyceride levels though. If they are high, trim down on the carbohydrates and eat more unsaturated fats.

The DASH Diet. Recommends eating a fairly moderate amount of fat and protein but a great deal of carbohydrates. It was primarily designed to reduce blood pressure. The diet plan follows the pyramid food guide and encourages a high consumption of whole wheat grains and fruit and vegetables and low-fat dairy. However, some dieters think it advises too much consumption to produce a significant weight loss.

Eat More, Weigh Less: by Dr. Ornish. Primarily vegetarian food and strictly low-fat. Warns to watch out for non-fat dairy and egg whites. This diet plan is low in calcium and restricts the consumption of healthy foods like seafood and lean poultry.

Eat Right for Your Type: This diet is really unusual because it bases its recommendations on your blood type. For example, it recommends lots of meat for people with the blood type O. However, diet programs for some blood types are nutritionally imbalanced and too low in calories. Furthermore, just for the record, there is no evidence that blood type can affect dietary requirements.

The Pritkin Principle: It focuses on cutting back on the amount of calories by eating ‘watery’ foods that make you feel full. It recommends eating vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, pasta, soups, salads and low-fat dairy, which it says is OK, although it also restricts protein sources to lean meat, seafood and poultry. It is healthy since it allows low amounts of saturated fats and rather large amounts of vegetables and fruits. However, it is low on calcium and limits lean protein sources.

Volumetrics: It provides for consuming fewer calories. It advises about the same foodstuffs as Pritkin but restricts fatty food and grain foodstuffs like popcorn, pretzels and crackers. This plan is reasonably healthy given the high amounts of fruit and vegetables. It also recommends eating fewer calories and saturated fats.

The Zone: It is fairly low on carbohydrates yet moderately high on proteins. It encourages low-fat protein foods like fish and chicken plus vegetables, fruits and grains. It is also a healthy diet but short on grains and calcium.

Weight Watchers: They recommend high carbohydrate meals, but are moderate on fats and proteins. A very healthy diet plan and very flexible too. It permits the dieter to plan his own meals rather than offering recipes, although there are WW TV dinners in the supermarkets.

Take a Summer Camp Visit

January 8th, 2010

Worried about sending your child off to camp without knowing enough about that camp? Take a journey to your child’s summer camp while it is in session. You will learn enough through direct observation and conversations to make you feel more comfortable, especially if you have reviewed the information about the camp and arrive prepared to ask questions.

Keep in mind that summer camp is always in motion! Campers may be out of camp, or it may be visiting day or between sessions. In those cases a camp director may ask you to choose another day. Review the camp’s promotional materials before the visit and have your questions ready.

Plan on taking at least three hours at the camp so that you will have time to observe activities at length and chat with campers and staff.
The settings, facilities and activities matter, but more important to your child’s experience will be how the administration and the staff behave in action. Watch how the camp’s counselors juggle the demands of campers. Of course, be sure to observe that safety precautions are consistently being taken.

During a visit, you should observe not only the facilities and the settings, but also look closely at how the administration and the staff behave in action. If your child is with you on the tour, pay attention to how the tour guide interacts with and includes your child. The way a guide interacts with your child will reveal a lot about the camp’s attitude and relationship with children.

Make a point to meet the camp director before you leave if he or she isn’t your tour guide. Be sure that you feel comfortable with the idea of that director taking care of your child for the summer. Check a few details. Does the director seem to be a hands-on administrator, or does he or she appear to spend more time at the office desk with paperwork? Does the director know the names of most campers? Does the director live on camp property?

Watch the counselors’ interaction with the campers in their care. If they aren’t kind, caring, sensitive, imaginative, patient and skilled, then nothing else will matter. Who is responsible for making sure your child has a safe and fun summer? Counselors. Watch the counselors during activities: counselors should be supervising and interacting with the kids rather than talking with other staff. Be sure counselors praise all campers in activities, not just the the best children. Counselors who teach a specialty should not just show their own skills but also show enthusiasm to the campers.

If you feel parental concern about sending your child to a summer camp this year, be sure to take the time and visit that camp. It will help you feel more comfortable about your wise choice for sending your child to a summer of great fun.

Unique Wedding Venues For Less

November 20th, 2009

Don’t get caught up in spending thousands of dollars on a wedding venue. Brides sometimes get tricked into believing it has to be expensive to look gorgeous. This is not the case. By saving money on the location of the wedding you will have extra money to spend in other areas of your wedding, including the dress, the cake, or the honeymoon.

A Friend Or Family Members Home

Do you know of a friend or family member with a wedding worthy home? This can be one of the most affordable locations to have your wedding. You can have the ceremony inside and a late evening reception by candlelight. Affordable, easy, and your friend will feel honored by you selecting their home for your big day.

A Small Church

Many times couples go after big city cathedral type venues. This is a great idea if you have a big budget, but if you would like to save some money, yet have a beautiful location, find a small country church to have your wedding. These quaint churches are many times a historical structure so they are well maintained, yet much cheaper than larger, more extravagant big city churches.

A Local Museum

Did you know that many museums have certain areas that are available for weddings? These areas are marked off and rented by the hour. Since many couples do not know this is an option, the museum rates are usually quite a bit cheaper than a well known wedding venue.

In the Forest

For the adventurous couple, why not exchange wedding vows in a beautiful clearing in the forest. If the land is privately owned by someone you know you can save a bundle of cash. Being surrounded by nature, fresh air, and great people sounds like the perfect wedding.

Mountaintop

A wedding on top of a mountain will not soon be forgotten. Couples love this location because it is surprisingly affordable and makes a beautiful statement of their love for one another.

Tankinis – Comfortable Yet Stylish Swimwear

November 20th, 2009

Instead of trying on unflattering swimsuits one after the other, opt for something with a better fit. You do not need to feel this way, and there are swimsuits that offer you a better fit overall than some of the bikinis that you see on skinny models and mannequins. Tankinis can often give you the right kind of attention.

With a bikini, you do not get the best fit because even the slightest size difference can be very unflattering. However, because tankinis fit more like a T-shirt, this means a little more leeway for you. This different kind of fit allows you to experiment with more cuts and designs that you might not otherwise get to wear. Everybody’s bodies are different, so swimsuits will fit differently. Tankinis allow you to highlight those differences in a flattering way.

One definite set back about bikinis is that you always feel self-conscious about your stomach. Not everyone can look like a model, but with tankinis, you get to show off your good assets without displaying your bad ones to the world.

Your bathing suit should allow you to get involved in the water games, not keep you from it. Sometimes a bikini can ride up, or come off altogether. Especially at family outings, this can be an embarrassment.

A tankini is perfect for a variety of different purposes and situations. If you are going to a water park and don’t want any swimsuit mishaps, then a tankini can help you out. This holds true with white waters and the beach, because a tankini will stick to you more. Get involved in the action by leaving the tankini back at home.

Another advantage that tankinis offer is that they are perfect for any occasion. It does not matter whether you are scheduled for fun with the family or work; a tankini is flattering, conservative and stylish.

With a tankini, you can show off your womanly curves, and hide the curves that may be problem areas. A tankini is the only swimsuit you will ever need, ideal for any situation, like the perfect pair of shoes. You can get practically any design, so you can keep your personal style and stay trendy.

If you want name brands, every major brand delivers fashionable tankinis in various cuts and patterns. Why settle for less when you can get exactly what you are looking for? Tankinis offer it all, style, accessibility, affordability and popularity. So when you are shopping for a flattering swimsuit that will not make you grimace in the fitting room, pick up a tankini from the racks.

A lot of women find that they would rather wear modest swimwear over the more flimsy bathing suits that provide less coverage. A good option is the tankini that gives the convenience of a 2 piece but is more durable.

Camp Blog

October 23rd, 2009

Before you send your child to a summer camp it is a good idea to get a good feeling about a particular camp. Checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog. Camp Blog

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft – it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

It seems as if we are learning more that Summer Camp helps children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ’social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors. See how Swift Nature Camp can put Adventure back into your childs life.

The Russell W. Hogrefe Fresh Start Fund was established by Russell W. Hogrefe during his tenure as Executive Director of the American Camp Association, Illinois Section. He served in that position from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. Russ spent his entire professional career providing children’s summer camp and other services to families with very low income. Teachers, social workers, counselors or other professionals refer campers. ACA Illinois Section staff and the person making the referral select an appropriate day or resident camp program. Camps must be accredited by the American Camp Association. The camper’s family is encouraged to pay whatever they can afford for the camping experience. The camp provides a partial campership and the Fund pays the balance. If you would like to donate fund to help an underprivileged child attend summer camp in 2009 please send a check or make an online donation. Summer camp is an experience that enriches lives and all children should have the opportunity to attend kids summer camp. To learn how Swift Nature Camp can help your child attend camp visit our website.

So what can you do a camp that you cant do at Home? How bout shooting guns? Yep, one of the fun activity at this kids camp is riflery. This is one area at camp where there is no clowning around. We take teaching riflery very seriously. It may be a tradition at many summer camp. But we are very proud that our riflery range is our safest area at camp. At Swift Nature Camp we only shoot at targets and we shoot from the prone position (thats lying down) , our guns are single shot .22 caliber rifles. Our campers try to earn our camp Marksman awards. Often parents ask why have rifles at camp? The answer is …we want to teach children how to properly and safely operate a gun. Campers also learn life lessons, like you need to practice and as you do practice bit by bit, you improve and before you know it you are loving Riflery.

We at Swift Nature Camp believe that your child’s safety is the most important part of camp. That is why we have a strict Lifejacket rule. Everyone must wear a PDF when in a boat. No exceptions, staff and campers alike. THis is true if on a river canoe trip or on on our own camp lake. Water is so much fun and kids love it but it is dangerous and we must be prepared. We even have a special “titanic test” to ensure that our lifejacket fits nice and snug in case of an emergency. Campers learn this the first day of camp.

How can a Blog Help

Charter into new waters this summer. For many kids, coming to camp is a big adventure! One of the biggest challenges is swimming in a lake. We all have had experience swimming in a nice blue pool. There is security in being able to see the bottom of the pool. Lake swimming is to enter the wild water and to cross a border. You pass the lake?s edge and you break the surface of the water itself. In doing so, you move from one realm into another: a new realm of freedom, adventure, magic and occasional danger. Watch out for those Turtles and Fish! Swimming in open water is a new experience that’s not to be feared, but embraced. Once you feel comfortable swimming in a lake, the world will open up to you and wherever you see water you will see a new adventure waiting. Swift Nature Camp Summer Camphas over 1500 acres of water right out your cabin front door. At Swift Nature Camp we have a wonderful swimming area full of fun toys, not to mention Wally (the water trampoline) & Sally (the slide). “Free Swim” is one of the most anticipated times of the camp day, but “Instructional Swim” is there to help give you build the confidence for those free swims. You can even earn American Red Cross Swimming levels

Catching frogs from camps own beaver pond is a huge camp sport at Swift Nature Camp. it is a challenge too. The big Bull Frogs put up a big battle to free them selves. We even have a favorite bull from the biggest meanest frog of them all JIMBO. Yes he is our mascot and is pictured on this page. Catching frogs is one of favorite things to do at this children’s summer camp. One of the best hunting spots is the lamp poles at night. You see the frogs come up from the pond at night looking for food and all the bugs hanging around the light will do just fine. One might wonder are you eating all these favorite catches. Nope they gan spend on night up at the Nature Center Zoo where they hang with the other animals anc catches then its back to where they were caught at. Next summer, join us for some serious frog catching.

How To Lose Weight Quickly

October 6th, 2009

Besides physical appearance, weight affects a person in many ways. This could be the overall standard of life, self-confidence, depression, health risks, and physical incapacities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight, which is why lots of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will trim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, eye-popping body.

The first thing that an overweight individual should do is find a health care expert to recommend the best weight loss program. This will only be done after a complete physical examination, which then to the recommendation of a proprietary weight loss plan. To lose excess pounds fast and effectively, four aspects of your life should be altered: what to eat, how to eat, behaviour and amount of activity.

Below are some fast recommendations that can change an over-weight individual’s life:

1: Fast weight loss consists of a multi-faceted plan that is made up of mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, diet supplements. Begin by studying a diet plan that can be easily incorporated into your lifestyle. Start an exercise regimen that requires at least fifteen minutes a day brisk walking, running, swimming or dancing.

2: Set yourself achievable targets. The ability to focus and have a proper mental outlook allows a person trying to lose weight to quickly lose those extra kilos. You must develop discipline and a proper outlook, a dieter will never become discouraged and give up.

3: Listen to your body. Each and everyone’s metabolism reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs. Try substituting one program for another to gauge the body’s reaction. An exercise program must be suited to one’s body, because some are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can. If walking is all that can be done, then walk, since this is proven to be the best exercise. Muscles burn calories so it’s also a good idea to put on a little more muscle and it looks good too.

4: Eat more fibre since it makes you feel fuller sooner and takes longer to digest, making it longer before you will be hungry again. For instance, a couple of slices of whole grain bread will remain in the system longer and put off hunger longer than white bread, which turns in to sugar more quickly. giving you a quick, sugar spike, which soon passes, leaving you hungry again.

5: Stay away from fried food especially deep-fried, as it contains a lot of fat. However, although fish and chicken are considered to be far leaner than beef, these white meats can retain even more fat than beef if it is fried. It is recommended that those on a strict diet opt for grilled food, as it does not contain much fat after the food has been cooked.

6: Drink lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushed’ and because weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated.

So, all in all, discipline and consistency is the way to rapid weight loss. Light dieting, exercise and the right nutritional supplements taken regularly everyday will result in a faster weight loss than having a huge, but short-lived campaign followed by a return to the bad old habits, because this only results in gaining more weight than before the weight loss plan was begun.
