Strategies for Treating Acne

February 28th, 2010

Most people with acne attempt to cure their blotchy skin with astringent creams, fruit washes, special soaps, lotions and treatments. However, the best way to cure acne is by changing your diet and shunning acne-causing items like fried food. A healthy diet, comprising organic unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, grains and beans is the first recommendation for treating acne.

Foods with trans-fatty acids, milk, milk products, margarine, shortening and man-made hydrogenated vegetable oils, as well as oily foods, should be avoided. It appears that the high occurrence of acne in the United States is made worse by the typical American diet. Americans typically eat fried food in large quantities, often cooked in the most damaging of fats and oils.

However, not all fats are bad for you, but the fats and oils that the typical American uses make them more prone to get acne and other skin problems. Products that can cause are ice cream, cheese, bacon, chocolate and milk. Furthermore, acne can’t really be cured using external skin creams and expensive soaps because the basic cause of the condition lies beneath the skin.

Pimples, spots or zits and blemishes are caused by bacteria and other irritants lying below the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles, which are generally produced by improper hygiene, scratching or squeezing and poor diet.

This unhealthy diet may be a result of too high a proportion of items such as processed, fatty, fried and sugary foods in your diet. A diet that is healthy for your skin must consist of raw and lightly cooked vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables that are rich in valuable trace minerals and fibre. Fresh green vegetables are essential, but you should also include lean protein sources and complex carbohydrates, like rice, whole-grain bread and potatoes in your diet.

These fibre-rich foods will help ensure a healthy gastrointestinal tract, which is especially important in the management of acne. You should eat three healthy meals every day in order to supply you with sufficient important nutrients and decrease your craving for sweet or/and oily, fried food.

Moreover, you should eat much more food that is rich in vitamin A, such as apricots, watermelons, and broccoli, along with lean beef, nuts, beans and whole grains, because they are rich in zinc, which can also be useful in reducing acne breakouts. It is also imperative to drink plenty of water to help flush out of the body all the poisons that cause the development of acne.

Overnight Camp Safety issues

February 7th, 2010

Shortly, nearly 10 million children be going to Summer Camps. But before they go, health experts are issuing strong new advice to both parents and camp directors, and recommending new precautions to protect campers’ health.

The new guideline, published in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics, was written by a team led by a University of Michigan Health System physician who specializes in camp health. Edward Walton, M.D., FAAP, FACEP, is lead author of the paper, which is an official policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was produced in conjunction with the American Camp Association.

This new policy suggests parents thoroughly determine if they are sending their child to the “right ” summer camp. Does it meet the child’s mental, emotional and physical well-being, as well as their interests and skills.

Walton says, “camps should provide parents with a complete picture of what their programs involve”. Look at the total package and be sure it is safe an healthy for your child.

Homesickness prevention, the authors write, should start weeks before a child goes off to camp, and can be led by parents with the help of the doctor or other health care provider who performs the child’s pre-camp health assessment.

Parents should also avoid making pre-arranged plans with their children about picking them up if they get homesick. This only gets kids thinking about the way out of camp. Only should parents discuss camp positively, avoid expressing doubts about a child’s ability to avoid homesickness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines say the pediatricians need to be involved with camps in their local have up to date protocols and help as medical backups for camp health personnel.

The increasing numbers of children who have asthma and allergies also bring new challenges for camps. The new guideline recommends that parents teach their children how to use rescue inhalers or EpiPens (allergy-calming epinephrine injection devices) long before the kids go to camp, and to work with camp officials to specify what situations might require children to use the devices. And camp officials are advised to allow children who know how to use such devices to carry them or have them nearby at all times.

“The delay that can occur when another camper or counselor has to run to the camp nurse’s office to grab an inhaler for a child who is having an asthma attack or an EpiPen for a child who has been stung by a bee can have real health consequences,” says Walton.

These guideline are set for traditional summer camps not for those camps with special needs. Yet it is recommend that all camps work with local pediatricians and health professionals to ensure that the best health care is in place for the children.

Teaching Math via “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge” Comic Book

February 5th, 2010

We are entering a new global economy…one in which our children will need to compete with other children around the world. In this digital age of massive distractions, such as video games and television, we have a lot of competing media for our children’s attention. To many children math is complicated and boring and too much like “work”. We needed a way to make learning math fun.

The comic book format is ideal for a number of reasons. For starters, the humble comic book has stood the “test of time”. Before the 24 hour cartoon network was even thought of, children would huddle, under their blankets, late at night, comic and flashlight in hand, and read about their favorite “hero”. Comic books are an ideal visual learning tool, very portable, requiring no additional attachments or electricity, or even an internet connection.

Math Comic Strips has just released their flagship item! It is an educational math comic called “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”. Dr. Knowledge is not a classic “Super Hero”…he is not from another planet and has not been bitten by an insect. Having said this, he does have some incredible math skills. He was able to acquire these skills by doing his math homework and studying other subjects over the years. He is able to utilize these skills by solving some incredible crimes and problems, and our hope is that children around the world will follow his adventures and become motivated to study into this world of math.

When Bobby was a young boy, he lost his mother. He was bullied at school and had a rather difficult childhood in many respects. His father decided that he would take his son on a trip to try to encourage and motivate him. As fate would have it, Bobby ended up on an island, by himself. He had to learn how to fend for himself, and it was on this island that he found he had a love for math. He needed these math skills to resolve all the problems that the island was going to throw his way.

Years later Bobby found himself back in the “civilized world”. It was here that he pursued his love of math, and eventually acquired a PhD in math at a prestigious university. His math skills helped him to acquire great wealth. He also used these skills and abilities to solve some incredible crimes and fantastic problems. Overall, he’s been making the world a better place to live in.

We hope that you enjoy “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”, and will join the bandwagon in promoting math education to our nation’s children. Math comic strips will never be the same again.

Pregnant – Start Your Planning Ahead Of Time

February 3rd, 2010

Expecting is the most natural thing in the world and occurs to nearly every female on earth. This is a universal occurrence and yet not so universal in the sense that each pregnant experience is unlike any other.

You are pregnant from the time the baby is conceived. However, this is not usually known until you experience some symptoms about one month after conception. The most obvious sign of pregnancy is the missing of monthly menstruation. Another obvious sign is the feeling of being nauseous. This particular symptom is especially strong if this is your first time being pregnant. Other signs of being pregnant are a loss of appetite, fatigue, irritation, etc.

Still, you may be intrigued to know that there are some females who menstruate despite being pregnant. These cases are very uncommon and are the exceptions rather than the rule. Be aware that you will probably experience most of the common symptoms, either to a lesser or higher degree of each.

It is best that you look into your lifestyle and re-think it before getting pregnant. This is inclusive but not limited to your diet, every-day habits, etc. If adjustment is essential, start your changes three months before your pregnancy. Better yet, start six months ahead in order to allow for the time of that you may require for transition.

If this is a big revamp, this is not a long duration at all. The other aspect that affects the time consumed is your ability to adapt. How fast or slow are you in adapting? Make no mistake. This bears no resemblance in completion of physical tasks like tidying up a room. We are talking about habits that require changing and this obviously involves your emotional system, which means that this is not something that responds well to rush or haste. As a matter of fact, this is not about the speed of time. What you need to do is to get into the flow of your own life, new or otherwise.

If you do need to change, which in your opinion, needs to be changed first? Which area you have been meaning to change time and again but never got round to doing it? This may indeed the best place to start. Do not worry that at first it seems undo-able. All you need is a plan of action that you can execute. Try breaking this ‘undo-able’ task into small doable bits.

For example, what is your sleeping and waking pattern? Are you always short of sleep? This deprivation is unnecessary from a natural point of view. Not having enough sleep affects the quality of waking experience. For an optimum life experience, sleep adequately and not only that, your sleep should be quality sleep. In other words, there is no point sleeping over eight hours if some of the time is spent sleeping fitfully because there are unresolved issues in your mind. Do you know that answers come to you while you are in deep sleep? Sleeping unwell helps you in nothing.

Begin your planning way ahead to getting pregnant if possible. You will not be sorry and your bundle of joy definitely deserves this, and so do you (as well as your significant other). Take this as an opportunity to be the person that you have always wanted to be.

Take a Summer Camp Visit

January 8th, 2010

Worried about sending your child off to camp without knowing enough about that camp? Take a journey to your child’s summer camp while it is in session. You will learn enough through direct observation and conversations to make you feel more comfortable, especially if you have reviewed the information about the camp and arrive prepared to ask questions.

Keep in mind that summer camp is always in motion! Campers may be out of camp, or it may be visiting day or between sessions. In those cases a camp director may ask you to choose another day. Review the camp’s promotional materials before the visit and have your questions ready.

Plan on taking at least three hours at the camp so that you will have time to observe activities at length and chat with campers and staff.
The settings, facilities and activities matter, but more important to your child’s experience will be how the administration and the staff behave in action. Watch how the camp’s counselors juggle the demands of campers. Of course, be sure to observe that safety precautions are consistently being taken.

During a visit, you should observe not only the facilities and the settings, but also look closely at how the administration and the staff behave in action. If your child is with you on the tour, pay attention to how the tour guide interacts with and includes your child. The way a guide interacts with your child will reveal a lot about the camp’s attitude and relationship with children.

Make a point to meet the camp director before you leave if he or she isn’t your tour guide. Be sure that you feel comfortable with the idea of that director taking care of your child for the summer. Check a few details. Does the director seem to be a hands-on administrator, or does he or she appear to spend more time at the office desk with paperwork? Does the director know the names of most campers? Does the director live on camp property?

Watch the counselors’ interaction with the campers in their care. If they aren’t kind, caring, sensitive, imaginative, patient and skilled, then nothing else will matter. Who is responsible for making sure your child has a safe and fun summer? Counselors. Watch the counselors during activities: counselors should be supervising and interacting with the kids rather than talking with other staff. Be sure counselors praise all campers in activities, not just the the best children. Counselors who teach a specialty should not just show their own skills but also show enthusiasm to the campers.

If you feel parental concern about sending your child to a summer camp this year, be sure to take the time and visit that camp. It will help you feel more comfortable about your wise choice for sending your child to a summer of great fun.

Anger Management Techniques

November 9th, 2009

I’m sure everyone has seen the movie Anger Management or has heard of it at least. It stars Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. It’s about Jack trying to teach Adam how to control his anger by using different techniques. This is a funny movie, however in all reality anger issues is by far means no laughing matter. Many people have anger issues and if they don’t address them they’ll just get worst.

Thousands of Americans each year suffer from anger management issues. The question becomes how does a person go about finding an appropriate anger management technique that will help them control their anger.

There are many different styles or techniques that people can use to help with their anger. One way is to try and understanding how to try and reach an agreement with the other person. Another technique is to practice meditation and breathing methods to relax.

Psychologist suggests several methods when dealing with anger management issues. One of these methods is called the direct method. With the direct method, the person expresses their displeasure with another person, this does not mean to beat the crap out of someone. It just means that you need to address a person with direct body language. It is important that you communicate clearly your feelings toward the other person.

Another method that is also a great method is the Honorable method. Many people struggle to accomplish this method at first. With this method it means you take responsibility for what you have done and you no longer make excuses for what you have done. So no more blaming others for your actions! This is a hard method to accomplish because many with anger issues have trouble admitting self failure or admitting they are lacking in certain area’s of there life.

The next approach you can use to help with your anger management issues is the focused approach. This works great if you are in the middle of an argument with somebody else. With this method you will stick to the issue that is present; you don’t want to bring up the past in the middle of an argument. It’s like adding fuel to the fire if you bring up past issues!

In the listen approach to anger management the person with the issue listens to what is being said to them by the other people involved in the issue at the current time. Anger tends to create a filter to where what is being said is often times not heard because the person automatically hears a negative tone coming from the other person.

Anger management can only work if the person with the anger problem is will to work on the problem. If they do not think they have a problem, they will not participate whole hearted. This is the biggest hurtle to get over when it comes to recovering from anger problems.

People who are in contact with someone who has anger issues need to realize to that it is important for both parties to work at the problem. The person with the problem needs to try to keep their cool while the other person needs to not provoke them. This is an ongoing process that takes a lot of practice and open communication.

To read more about many of the Anger Management techinues that are available to use today regardless how old or young you are visit this site now.

Camp Blog

October 23rd, 2009

Before you send your child to a summer camp it is a good idea to get a good feeling about a particular camp. Checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog. Camp Blog

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft – it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

It seems as if we are learning more that Summer Camp helps children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ’social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors. See how Swift Nature Camp can put Adventure back into your childs life.

The Russell W. Hogrefe Fresh Start Fund was established by Russell W. Hogrefe during his tenure as Executive Director of the American Camp Association, Illinois Section. Camps must be accredited by the American Camp Association. The camper’s family is encouraged to pay whatever they can afford for the camping experience. The camp provides a partial campership and the Fund pays the balance. Summer camp is an experience that enriches lives and all children should have the opportunity to attend kids summer camp. To learn how Swift Nature Camp can help your child attend camp visit our website.

So what can you do a camp that you cant do at Home? How bout shooting guns? Yep, one of the fun activity at this kids camp is riflery. This is one area at camp where there is no clowning around. We take teaching riflery very seriously. It may be a tradition at many summer camp. But we are very proud that our riflery range is our safest area at camp. At Swift Nature Camp we only shoot at targets and we shoot from the prone position (thats lying down) , our guns are single shot .22 caliber rifles. Our campers try to earn our camp Marksman awards. Often parents ask why have rifles at camp? The answer is …we want to teach children how to properly and safely operate a gun. Campers also learn life lessons, like you need to practice and as you do practice bit by bit, you improve and before you know it you are loving Riflery.

We at Swift Nature Camp believe that your child’s safety is the most important part of camp. That is why we have a strict Lifejacket rule. Everyone must wear a PDF when in a boat. No exceptions, staff and campers alike. THis is true if on a river canoe trip or on on our own camp lake. Water is so much fun and kids love it but it is dangerous and we must be prepared. We even have a special “titanic test” to ensure that our lifejacket fits nice and snug in case of an emergency. Campers learn this the first day of camp.

Shopping for Baby Strollers the Right Way

October 10th, 2009

Parents find themselves with a lot of preparations to make when they’re expecting a new baby. Parents have to decide on swings, cribs, car seats, strollers and other items that their new baby will need. One of the most difficult of these decisions is choosing a baby stroller. There are so many different styles and so many brands to choose from that it can be tough to figure out which is the right one for your child. However, there are a couple things to keep in mind as you search which can help you choose wisely.

Safety is the most important consideration. What you need is something to get your baby from point A to point B in a safe manner. Considerations like storage space and other features should be secondary to safety, which should always come first and foremost. Any stroller you choose for your child needs to be sturdily constructed and not fold or collapse easily. You should check the weight limit that the stroller is rated for to make sure that it will be capable of carrying your baby as well as any items you may want to carry in its storage area, if any.

You should look for a five point safety harness just as you would expect in a car seat for an infant. Older children may be able to use a three point harness instead, but only if they are above a certain age. Before you buy a stroller you should also make sure that it has not been the subject of a recall – something which is especially important if you are choosing a baby stroller which is used.

Once you have found a selection of that meet your safety requirements, it is time to begin thinking about your comfortable pushing requirements. A stroller should not be a hassle to push. The purpose of the stroller is to make your job easier not harder.

You should be able to reach the stroller’s handles without bending down or reaching up. Paddled handles are a nice feature, since these are comfortable to use. The wheels should also be examined; these should move smoothly and not tend to stick.

Much of choosing a baby jogger comes in knowing your needs. How many features do you want from your stroller? Do you need extra compartments for snacks, bags, and sippy cups or just room for your baby? Depending on your needs, you may can get by with a lightweight stroller. Jogging strollers are also a consideration if you plan to be walking on rough terrain or outdoors a lot.

When choosing a baby stroller, it is also important to consider the age and number of children you wish to accommodate. Strollers are now made for one or two children. Double strollers are designed for traveling with two children the same age or one older and one younger child.

Choosing a baby stroller can be relatively easy as long as you know what you need from this important baby accessory. Narrow the choices down to those which meet the safety criteria and try out these strollers and consider their features before you decide on the stroller you think best. You should always try out a stroller before purchasing and if possible, ask friends and family for recommendations.
