Teaching Math via “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge” Comic Book

February 5th, 2010

We are entering a new global economy…one in which our children will need to compete with other children around the world. In this digital age of massive distractions, such as video games and television, we have a lot of competing media for our children’s attention. To many children math is complicated and boring and too much like “work”. We needed a way to make learning math fun.

The comic book format is ideal for a number of reasons. For starters, the humble comic book has stood the “test of time”. Before the 24 hour cartoon network was even thought of, children would huddle, under their blankets, late at night, comic and flashlight in hand, and read about their favorite “hero”. Comic books are an ideal visual learning tool, very portable, requiring no additional attachments or electricity, or even an internet connection.

Math Comic Strips has just released their flagship item! It is an educational math comic called “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”. Dr. Knowledge is not a classic “Super Hero”…he is not from another planet and has not been bitten by an insect. Having said this, he does have some incredible math skills. He was able to acquire these skills by doing his math homework and studying other subjects over the years. He is able to utilize these skills by solving some incredible crimes and problems, and our hope is that children around the world will follow his adventures and become motivated to study into this world of math.

When Bobby was a young boy, he lost his mother. He was bullied at school and had a rather difficult childhood in many respects. His father decided that he would take his son on a trip to try to encourage and motivate him. As fate would have it, Bobby ended up on an island, by himself. He had to learn how to fend for himself, and it was on this island that he found he had a love for math. He needed these math skills to resolve all the problems that the island was going to throw his way.

Years later Bobby found himself back in the “civilized world”. It was here that he pursued his love of math, and eventually acquired a PhD in math at a prestigious university. His math skills helped him to acquire great wealth. He also used these skills and abilities to solve some incredible crimes and fantastic problems. Overall, he’s been making the world a better place to live in.

We hope that you enjoy “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”, and will join the bandwagon in promoting math education to our nation’s children. Math comic strips will never be the same again.

Pregnant – Start Your Planning Ahead Of Time

February 3rd, 2010

Expecting is the most natural thing in the world and occurs to nearly every female on earth. This is a universal occurrence and yet not so universal in the sense that each pregnant experience is unlike any other.

You are pregnant from the time the baby is conceived. However, this is not usually known until you experience some symptoms about one month after conception. The most obvious sign of pregnancy is the missing of monthly menstruation. Another obvious sign is the feeling of being nauseous. This particular symptom is especially strong if this is your first time being pregnant. Other signs of being pregnant are a loss of appetite, fatigue, irritation, etc.

Still, you may be intrigued to know that there are some females who menstruate despite being pregnant. These cases are very uncommon and are the exceptions rather than the rule. Be aware that you will probably experience most of the common symptoms, either to a lesser or higher degree of each.

It is best that you look into your lifestyle and re-think it before getting pregnant. This is inclusive but not limited to your diet, every-day habits, etc. If adjustment is essential, start your changes three months before your pregnancy. Better yet, start six months ahead in order to allow for the time of that you may require for transition.

If this is a big revamp, this is not a long duration at all. The other aspect that affects the time consumed is your ability to adapt. How fast or slow are you in adapting? Make no mistake. This bears no resemblance in completion of physical tasks like tidying up a room. We are talking about habits that require changing and this obviously involves your emotional system, which means that this is not something that responds well to rush or haste. As a matter of fact, this is not about the speed of time. What you need to do is to get into the flow of your own life, new or otherwise.

If you do need to change, which in your opinion, needs to be changed first? Which area you have been meaning to change time and again but never got round to doing it? This may indeed the best place to start. Do not worry that at first it seems undo-able. All you need is a plan of action that you can execute. Try breaking this ‘undo-able’ task into small doable bits.

For example, what is your sleeping and waking pattern? Are you always short of sleep? This deprivation is unnecessary from a natural point of view. Not having enough sleep affects the quality of waking experience. For an optimum life experience, sleep adequately and not only that, your sleep should be quality sleep. In other words, there is no point sleeping over eight hours if some of the time is spent sleeping fitfully because there are unresolved issues in your mind. Do you know that answers come to you while you are in deep sleep? Sleeping unwell helps you in nothing.

Begin your planning way ahead to getting pregnant if possible. You will not be sorry and your bundle of joy definitely deserves this, and so do you (as well as your significant other). Take this as an opportunity to be the person that you have always wanted to be.

Infant Pajamas Sets Are A Great Gift Idea For Any Newborn Baby

January 12th, 2010

Infant pajamas are not always an easy purchase, most parents and guardians will often be challenged by all there is to learn about baby pajamas. This is not surprising because there are so many factors to consider like style, design, color, and price.

Color isn’t much of an issue for infants because they haven’t learned to be picky as older children and adults have. Infants are more concerned about how comfortable their sleepwear is.

One thing that many people forget is that babies and infants don’t really care about the color of the sleepwear they have on. However, older children can be rather picky about this.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you want to be as practical as possible when picking your infant pajamas. There are a wide variety of fancy sleepwear available, but remember, infants and older babies spit up and make messes.

For this reason, it’s important to choose sleepwear that can be machine washed. Some of the fancier styles of pajamas require hand washing or dry cleaning. This is not practical for most parents of infants.

The next consideration that needs to be made when choosing infant pajamas and baby pajamas is the range of mobility that the child will have when they are placed in the pajamas. Highly decorative pajamas and tight fighting pajamas will hinder the child’s ability to move easily.

Once a baby figures out that they can’t move very well, there’s a high likelihood of them getting pretty upset. Nobody will have a pleasant night if the baby is crying. For a happy baby and good nights rest, look for loose fitting, plain, inexpensive infant pajamas, instead of something fancy and uncomfortable.

When shopping for infant pajamas, keep in mind that a baby’s diaper needs to be changed often and they tend to spit up frequently. This means they may need to be changed to another outfit several times each day.

This means that you will want to purchase clothing that is easy to place and remove the baby from. It is often best to go with Velcro closures or buttons over zippers. If you follow the tips listed here, you will find that it is easy to choose infant pajamas and baby pajamas.

Everyone of us at www. PajamasPajamas.com want to help you with all your information and resources on Infant Pajamas, newborn pajamas, Baby Pajamas and along with more styles and types that you can find from. Our quest is to help you find the best infant sleepwear that will suit all your child’s needs.

Surrogate Parenting Finding a Surrogate Mom

November 7th, 2009

Many people are unable to have a child through natural means. If adoption is not for you maybe surrogate parenting is. You will have to sign a legal contract to partake in this. A woman will become pregnant with another woman’s baby after she has went through an in vitro fertilization process. She will give up any legal rights to the child she has at birth. The surrogate may or may not have any involvement in the child’s life depending on what was in the legal agreement.

If you are therefore making the decision to become or hire a surrogate, it’s a decision that must not be taking lightly. So what happens in this process is that a surrogate mother will usually be financially compensated for her services and all the medical bills related to the pregnancy and birth will be paid for as well.

So after the pregnancy and birth is finished the baby is transferred to woman who could not conceive herself. You can find that sometimes the surrogate will know the couple, they could be a friend or even a family member. They could also be unknown, or doing it for the money, or they just want to help others who cannot conceive.

If you have decided to be a surrogate you need to fully understand what you are agreeing to. It is reckoned that the ideal surrogate already has children of her own and does not wish to extend her own family any more. That is one of the reasons why a legal agreement has to be entered into before the process is initiated.

Use the following resources if you are interested in surrogacy. Log onto the web and have a look at surrogate parenting websites. Try and find some in your area as the law varies in different areas. You could also sign up on surrogacy forums, you will meet people who have done it before. Finally you could check if any books on the subject can offer you and insight in surrogacy before you take the plunge.

I hope the new ideas discussed about surrogate parenting by Calli Kuzon can also be of good value to you. You can find info concerning finding a surrogate mom as well.

Cleaning House. One Of Life’s More Important Tasks.

October 30th, 2009

Women (and men) of America. Cleaning your house is a serious business. It’s easy to think that house cleaning is simple and should be over fast, but not so.

Your commitment to cleaning your house tells the world about you, but more important it tells your children about you as well, and you’re their role model.

Your ability at house cleaning is an expression, often, of how you grew up. Did your mother keep a neat clean house? If so then there’s a good chance that you will too. After all, we all learn from our mothers, and that includes domestic skills. If mom was house proud chances you will be too.

Although some of us had great role models for these sorts of things, some of us didn’t. Not all of us had parents who taught us to run a household well.

That was probably because mom and dad never learned the important skills of housekeeping from their parents.

I make sure that my kids are involved in all aspects of running the home. They complain of course, but I still have them drying dishes, vacuuming the house or cooking the meals. And they have to do the tasks to earn their pocket money.

I believe that learning simple domestic skills should be a high priority for children, just as important as learning all sorts of other life skills.

One of the most important skills to impart to children in my view is cooking. Start them small when young of course, but if you get them cooking when young they’ll love it and progress to full meals over time.

My parents taught me that and I have been eternally grateful ever since that I learned the basics of cooking by the age of 15. And I have used it almost every day since. I’m a man, but I have no trouble engaging in house cleaning and cooking and lots of other domestic skills, because I know how.

Children emulate their parents. If you engage in regular household chores they’ll assume that’s normal. If you keep a clean house they’ll see that and copy it. Even better, actively engage them and show them how it’s all done and you’re setting the groundwork in your kids for some essential life skills.

But if you keep house so badly that you can’t invite your friends to dinner because of embarrassment, then your kids will probably do the same when they grow up.

So in this vein I’ve put together a book of household cleaning tips and tricks that your mom should have taught you, but perhaps didn’t. But that you can teach to your kids.

The sorts of tips that millions of people around the country should know.

So if you’re a parent remember that your kids learn from you. They need to be shown good skills in house cleaning, cooking and much more, from an early age. It’s an important part of being a parent.

Camp Blog

October 23rd, 2009

Before you send your child to a summer camp it is a good idea to get a good feeling about a particular camp. Checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog. Camp Blog

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft – it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

It seems as if we are learning more that Summer Camp helps children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ’social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors. See how Swift Nature Camp can put Adventure back into your childs life.

The Russell W. Hogrefe Fresh Start Fund was established by Russell W. Hogrefe during his tenure as Executive Director of the American Camp Association, Illinois Section. He served in that position from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. Russ spent his entire professional career providing children’s summer camp and other services to families with very low income. Teachers, social workers, counselors or other professionals refer campers. ACA Illinois Section staff and the person making the referral select an appropriate day or resident camp program. Camps must be accredited by the American Camp Association. The camper’s family is encouraged to pay whatever they can afford for the camping experience. The camp provides a partial campership and the Fund pays the balance. If you would like to donate fund to help an underprivileged child attend summer camp in 2009 please send a check or make an online donation. Summer camp is an experience that enriches lives and all children should have the opportunity to attend kids summer camp. To learn how Swift Nature Camp can help your child attend camp visit our website.

So what can you do a camp that you cant do at Home? How bout shooting guns? Yep, one of the fun activity at this kids camp is riflery. This is one area at camp where there is no clowning around. We take teaching riflery very seriously. It may be a tradition at many summer camp. But we are very proud that our riflery range is our safest area at camp. At Swift Nature Camp we only shoot at targets and we shoot from the prone position (thats lying down) , our guns are single shot .22 caliber rifles. Our campers try to earn our camp Marksman awards. Often parents ask why have rifles at camp? The answer is …we want to teach children how to properly and safely operate a gun. Campers also learn life lessons, like you need to practice and as you do practice bit by bit, you improve and before you know it you are loving Riflery.

We at Swift Nature Camp believe that your child’s safety is the most important part of camp. That is why we have a strict Lifejacket rule. Everyone must wear a PDF when in a boat. No exceptions, staff and campers alike. THis is true if on a river canoe trip or on on our own camp lake. Water is so much fun and kids love it but it is dangerous and we must be prepared. We even have a special “titanic test” to ensure that our lifejacket fits nice and snug in case of an emergency. Campers learn this the first day of camp.

What Are the Different Types Of Skin Cancer?

October 12th, 2009

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer that is diagnosed every day. It is also highly preventable and very curable if it is caught early enough. There are three different types of skin cancers that can be found on your skin.

The first type of skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. They are generally found in areas that have been overexposed to the sun. The face and ears are typical locations for this type of skin cancer. With squamous cell carcinoma, you will most often have a bump in the beginning and it will eventually turn into an open sore that will not heal. It will continue to get larger and larger if left untreated. It will also spread to other parts of the body if you do not get treatment for this type of skin cancer.

A type of skin cancer is called basal cell carcinoma. The face, hands and neck are where these are usually located, and up to seventy five percent are included in all diagnosed skin cancers. If you detect it early enough, basal cell carcinoma can be treated very effectively. If you have a sore that bleeds and is irritated, that may be basal cell carcinoma. This cancer can also look like a fresh scar.

The third type of skin cancer is the most dangerous of all of them. It is melanoma and it can be found on any area of the body. It is usually found on the arms and legs in the beginning. It will look like a mole or freckle that has recently appeared on the skin. It can also be from an existing mole that has recently changed its size, shape or color. The border of the melanoma will be indistinguishable and it may have more than one color.

It may be impossible to distinguish the border of a melanoma. It may consist of more than one color. This type of skin cancer must be found and eradicated early on. In this way, the problems that accompany the late stages of this cancer can be avoided.

You can do a great deal to prevent skin cancer from occurring. Make sure that you take precautions when you are out in the sun to protect your skin at all times. Wear a sunscreen every time you are outside no matter the season.

The best chance you have of surviving skin cancer is to detect it early. Make sure to cover your exposed areas with clothing and protect your head and face by wearing a hat. Be aware of any changes in your skin.

Charter into new waters this summer. For many kids, coming to camp is a big adventure! One of the biggest challenges is swimming in a lake. We all have had experience swimming in a nice blue pool. There is security in being able to see the bottom of the pool. Lake swimming is to enter the wild water and to cross a border. You pass the lake?s edge and you break the surface of the water itself. In doing so, you move from one realm into another: a new realm of freedom, adventure, magic and occasional danger. Watch out for those Turtles and Fish! Swimming in open water is a new experience that’s not to be feared, but embraced. Once you feel comfortable swimming in a lake, the world will open up to you and wherever you see water you will see a new adventure waiting. Swift Nature Camp Summer Camphas over 1500 acres of water right out your cabin front door. At Swift Nature Camp we have a wonderful swimming area full of fun toys, not to mention Wally (the water trampoline) & Sally (the slide). “Free Swim” is one of the most anticipated times of the camp day, but “Instructional Swim” is there to help give you build the confidence for those free swims. You can even earn American Red Cross Swimming levels

Catching frogs from camps own beaver pond is a huge camp sport at Swift Nature Camp. it is a challenge too. The big Bull Frogs put up a big battle to free them selves. We even have a favorite bull from the biggest meanest frog of them all JIMBO. Yes he is our mascot and is pictured on this page. Catching frogs is one of favorite things to do at this children’s summer camp. One of the best hunting spots is the lamp poles at night. You see the frogs come up from the pond at night looking for food and all the bugs hanging around the light will do just fine. One might wonder are you eating all these favorite catches. Nope they gan spend on night up at the Nature Center Zoo where they hang with the other animals anc catches then its back to where they were caught at. Next summer, join us for some serious frog catching.

Plan For Pregnancy Tips

October 8th, 2009

Mearly every woman is blessed with the capacity to bear a child at least one time in her lifetime. It is considered to be one of the greatest gifts that a woman can give her husband. Bearing a child would draw the couple more closer together, and at this certain point in their lives they can actually call themselves a family. Upon learning that the woman is pregnant, most couples enthusiastically start planning for her pregnancy and eventual childbirth.

When talking about pregnancy, it is very important to know about preconception issues regarding on giving birth. A check up with the physician or midwife would be highly advisable for the woman in order to prepare for childbirth. Physical preparation is also needed for giving birth, since this could change the normal function of the woman’s body. A caregiver would be helpful in preparing the woman’s body in conceiving, and also impart information concerning potential problems in pregnancy. Anxiety is commonly felt at this point, since the woman would really have to follow certain precautions in order to conceive a healthy baby. By seeking advice regarding on preconception, safety, lifestyle changes, prenatal vitamins, and the importance of folic acid, the woman could really prepare herself for giving birth.

In preparing for pregnancy, a change in the woman’s lifestyle is not to be taken lightly. Smoking cigarettes is a definite no-no, and the consumption of alcohol must be stopped. These addictions can affect the health of both the woman and her unborn baby in a negative way. A woman might need to lose or gain weight, according to her present weight relative to her height and build. Being too fat or too thin might bring complications for both the woman and the baby. A good start in preparing for childbirth would be to establish a fitness regime for the duration of the pregnancy. Asking your physician about nutrition and working out would be recommended for possible questions regarding exercise and food intake.

Learning more about the woman’s body while on the early stages of pregnancy is essential for proper knowledge of the situation. Various parts of a woman’s body have specific roles when it comes to pregnancy. Certain disorders from both prospective parents should be discussed with the physician for additional health background information. Anxiety and stress is also normally felt by the couple since this is a very critical stage for the woman. Preconception stress is normal in women about to give birth, considering factors such as scheduling, sexuality, and self esteem.

When preparing for pregnancy, the couple should be educated enough to know how to handle a child. Knowledge of early pregnancy symptoms are also important since these are signs that giving birth would happen in due time. When the couple feels that they are ready, then a visit to the Obstetrician/Gynecologist would help in gathering more information on pregnancy. The couple should make use of a pregnancy calendar in order to follow the due course of giving birth. Anxiety is commonly felt by women when they know that they are pregnant. Feelings of worry and tension are mormal signs that shows her being anxious about giving birth. But by spending time with your husband, regular visits to the OBGYN, finding time to relax, with good exercise, anxiety should not be a problem at all. All you have to worry about is what should we name the baby?
